He is a native Texan who was born in Galveston, Texas.He attended the University of Texas in Austin majoring in business finance and was recognized on the Dean's List each year until graduation. He then attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston where he graduated with high honors.Following graduation, he completed an internship in surgery and a neurosurgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine.He served as chief resident at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor St. Luke's Hospital, and Ben Taub General Hospital. He then completed his medical school training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School where he was selected into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society.Dr. Gist completed neurosurgery residency at Houston Methodist Hospital where he was trained extensively over seven years in complex brain and spine operations. This training was done in part by the neurosurgeons comprising the Neurosurgical Group of Texas who asked Dr. Gist to join their practice after completion of his residency.
