Biography: Dr. Lavine dedicates his practice exclusively to diseases associated with the cerebrovascular system and to those diseases treated with Endovascular Neurosurgical and Interventional Neuroradiological Procedures. He was among the first surgeons in the country to complete training in these procedures after completing neurosurgical training. His expertise is in the area of neurovascular pathology including such conditions as brain hemorrhage, brain aneurysms, brain and spinal cord arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), carotid and vertebral artery disease, and stroke. He serves as a Director of Neuroendovascular Services at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and is a Professor of Neurological Surgery in the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Lavine and the other members of the Neurovascular Team in the Department of Neurological Surgery offer comprehensive care of cerebrovascular and related diseases. Additionally, Dr. Lavine collaborates with all other members of the Department of Neurosurgery and many other specialties that recommend the use of minimally invasive endovascular and percutaneous procedures to the benefit of patients with a wide variety of conditions.

Biography: Aya Haggiagi, MD is an assistant professor of neurology at CUIMC, in the Division of Neuro-Oncology. Dr. Haggiagi is board certified in Neurology and Neuro-Oncology. She graduated with highest honors from the University of Al-Fateh School of Medicine in Tripoli, Libya. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia, under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Shelanski, where her research focused on biochemical and genetic changes in neurofibrillary tangle predominant dementia. Dr. Haggiagi then pursued her medicine internship training at Westchester Medical Center, followed by neurology residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. After residency, she completed a two-year fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Haggiagi was an attending physician and an investigator at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center prior to returning to NYP/CUIMC. She is the recipient of the Society for Neuro-Oncology 2017 Best Abstract Award. Her research interests include the development of clinical trials, precision medicine, and neurologic complications of immunotherapy.

Biography: Nicole Lamanna, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Hematologic Malignancies Section of the Hematology/Oncology Division. Dr. Lamanna is a hematologist/oncologist whose research interests include lymphoid leukemias, specifically chronic lymphocytic leukemia. She is an experienced clinical investigator and her research focus has been the development of combination therapies that include chemoimmunotherapy, immunomodulatory drugs, novel kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies. She also is working to find active, safer therapies for older patients with these diseases. She earned her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed her fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Care Philosophy: Dr. Ilya Iofin is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital. His subspecialty is Orthopaedic Oncology. Dr. Iofin received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine. He completed residency in orthopaedic surgery at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. His fellowship training in orthopaedic oncology was done at the Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University. Biography: Gordon Baltuch MD, PhD, FACS, FRCS(C) is the Co-Chief of Functional Neurosurgery Division at Columbia Neurosurgery. Dr. Baltuch specializes in the surgical treatment of movement disorders and was previously director of the Penn Center for Functional and Restorative Neurosurgery and professor of neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where he had been a faculty member since 1996. Dr. Baltuch was one of the first neurosurgeons in the United States to use deep brain stimulation to reduce tremor and other motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. After training in Montreal, Switzerland, and France, Dr. Baltuch moved to Penn to develop one of the first deep brain stimulation programs in the United States. He has treated more than 1,600 patients using the procedure, making him one of the most experienced neurosurgeons in functional neurosurgery. He also pioneered the use of the technology to treat epilepsy, depression, and Alzheimer's disease. More recently, Dr. Baltuch also became a pioneer in the use of focused ultrasound, a nonsurgical procedure approved in 2016 to treat essential tremor. Since 2017, he has successfully performed hundreds of these procedures and developed Penn's focused ultrasound program into one of the largest such practices in the country. As a researcher, Dr. Baltuch is at the forefront in the testing of new restorative approaches, including gene therapy for Parkinson's disease and, more recently, stem cell therapy for stroke. He also conducts fundamental neuroscience studies of the human brain supported by federal funding, including the White House Brain Initiative. Before joining Penn, Dr. Baltuch completed a fellowship in Lausanne, Switzerland, and a residency in neurosurgery at the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI). He earned his MD and PhD degrees at McGill University. Among other honors, Dr. Baltuch received the Wilder Penfield Award in Neurosurgery from the MNI, the K.G. McKenzie Award for Basic Science Research from the Canadian Neurosurgical Society, and the Luigi Mastroianni Clinical Innovator Award of Excellence from the Faculty of Medicine at Penn. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
