Following medical school, he completed his residency training in the Department of Neurology, as well as a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology, at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Dr. Bekenstein also holds a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College and spent two summers working for Nobel Prize geneticist Marshall Nirenberg at the National Institutes of Health.
