After a brief stint as a ski instructor, Dr. Hermos received her Master's degree in Education at The University of Colorado, Boulder. She was a classroom teacher in Denver for several years before moving to New York in 2000. Dr. Hermos worked in the non-profit sector before deciding to study medicine. Dr. Hermos attended medical school and trained in Internal Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She has now been practicing primary care in New York City since completing her residency in 2013.

She earned her bachelor's degree from Vassar College, where she graduated with a major in Women's studies focusing on Anthropology. Though originally from Pittsburgh, Dr. Smerd now lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.
