Dr. Michael Shen, MD

We visited Dr Shen for a second opinion for my issues with back pain and nerve problems. He showed us my X-rays and MRI and explained in a very simple and easy to understand way what’s going on with me. He gave us three options for treatment, the least invasive to ultimately , surgery. He told us that he treats symptoms, not what he sees in the images. Why fix something that is not broken is what he said. He listened to our concerns and answered all of our questions and we did not feel rushed at any time. We decided to have Dr Shen treat me because of his approach to treatments. Less invasive treatment. We trust that Dr Shen will get me fixed.

Dr. Shen was dismissive, obviously in a hurry since his hand was on the door with in seconds of entering. Would ask a question and before you finish a sentence he would interrupt ask another and interrupt again. Poeple are putting there health and life in your hands. If you chose to be a Dr. at least pretend you care about the people you see. His nurse has the same attitude. Could care less about you.

I wouldn't know how to evaluate his technical expertise, but his people skills are severely lacking. He rushed the appointment, stood at the door with his hand on the knob while I was trying to ask about his observation. I felt put off and brushed aside.

I got the distinct feeling from Doctor Shen of “fast food medicine” not addressing all of my concerns in a rush. My assumption is that if you are not a candidate for surgery, their interest is limited.

One year post-op from a two disc replacement, cervical, by Dr. Shen. The results were astounding and the operation flawless! Compassionate, highly skilled & experienced, Highly recommend Dr Shen!!

Dr Shen is great and my pain is completely gone after over 15 years... After surgery i was out of pain meds so i left 6 messages over a 5 day period no return call so i just had to deal with it...A month later at my next visit i ask Dr Shen for a therapy referral closer to my house, he says no problem.. Two weeks later after 8 messages from me and multiple messages from physical therapist i finally get a call they got the referral but there was no therapy order so they can't treat me until they get that... I spend another 2 weeks leaving over 10 messages along with the times the therapist was calling them with no reply... It has now been over a month and I still have not had therapy because they can't send the order.. Completely unacceptable!

Dr Shen gave a very good explanation of the type of surgery that I require.

I had a neck fusion that was an exacerbation from an on the job injury in another state over 20 years ago. Dr. Shen and his staff got the surgery approved without a hitch. The surgery was successful and pretty easy. Very little post op pain. I went home the same day and didn't need any pain meds after the first day. Dr. Shen spent time answering all my questions, and there were absolutely no surprises. He is a very professional and highly competent surgeon.

I had an appointment with Dr. Shen about my continuous back pain that goes into my legs and numbness in my feet from two other back surgeries (Not by Shen). I felt like he was in a rush and he told me my back was fine and stated that he was a back surgeon that I needed to see another type of doctor.He made me feel like a kid saying” if you have a heart condition you see a cardiologist, if you need heart surgery you see a heart surgeon.I was hoping for him to say let’s get you feeling better and give me some guidance to another doctor but I had to ask him if he could guide me to a doctor.I couldn’t get a question in with him and that was it.No, I would not refer him to anyone, he left me right where I was, unanswered. I had to ask him if he had a recommendation for a doctor that I could see to help me with my problems and gave me a card to Dr. Chris D’Ambrosia in his office. I called a friend who is a nurse who told me that Dr. D’Ambrosia is always in a hurry with patients.

Dr Shen reviewed and explained MRI and X-ray results with me in a very professional and informative manner. He rendered a well supported opinion regarding a progression of surgical options from least invasive to more complex procedures to be decided as symptoms worsened. Extremely helpful in understanding my options.

I have had the best results with the 2 surgeries I have had to have in years past.I have another level of my degenerative spine that I consulted with him again. I feel as though he was extremely thorough explaining that is happening at this stage. Additionally he was very clear with the treatment options. After experiencing severe sciatica I felt like my spine is best known by Dr Shen.(I had a fusion in 2014 and have visited more recently about an MRI of my upper spine.)He always lets me know what he sees and what he recommends in a way I feel I understand.

I constantly felt rushed and like I as a patient didn’t matter. The only great part of the whole experience was the front desk lady that checked me in. She was so nice and delightful. The nurse who took my back was cold and I felt like I was a box to be checked off. Even the X-ray technician was rushing and condescending. Dr. Shen was right outside my door and I could hear them all talking about me and my case. It made me feel as though my past medicinal problems and current pain was not important. When I finally got to talk with Dr. Shen it lasted a while five minutes. He never actually examined me and dismissed my past surgical history and drummed it down to inflammation. Wrote me scripts and sent me on my way. . . I will not be returning.

Dr Shen is definitely the very best spinal doctor I have ever been to! I was very impressed with his approach to recommend surgery as the last resort, and to try least invasive treatments firsthand. He is very knowledgeable concerning all aspects of spinal disease and care. I strongly believe that this doctor will help you, and that you will be glad that you went to see him!

Dr. Shen was very kind and fully explained his thoughts on my condition, and I felt like he was somebody that I could trust that understood the problem with my back very well. I’ve only seen him for that initial visit. We’ll see how the results are. so far very positive.
