Biography: I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and Board Certified TeleMental Health Provider (BC-TMH) and have worked with teen and adult clients and families in capacities that span from basic case management to residential treatment for the past two decades. I have extensive experience supporting clients who are working through addiction (including process addictions such as gaming/screen, gambling or sex addiction), parents in need of support/parenting skills (including behavior management training), and co-occurring mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADD/ADHD, and other clinical diagnoses. I also enjoy working with clients who have experienced trauma, anger management, adjustment disorders, and overcoming unhealthy experiences during childhood. I call these clients survivors. I am not your best fit for personality disorders, domestic violence, or psychotic disorders in a Telemental Health platform. I am happy to help you find someone who is. My approach to counseling is client-centered. This means the way you and I work to achieve your goals may be very different from the way I approach my work with another client. We will work together to achieve the outcomes you desire to live a more healthy fulfilling life. My work with clients is strength-based, but candid. My goal is to help you be happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. At times this means tackling choices and challenges that are barriers to you meeting those goals. My work with clients is evidence-based. This means I utilize techniques and processes that are research-proven for clients working through concerns similar to yours. These techniques may come from a combination of counseling theories such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Person-Centered approaches. I'm so grateful that you're considering me for your therapist. If you choose me as your counselor, our first step will be to complete an "informed consent intake." This is best done live via video but can also be done through messaging. Once you have chosen me as your counselor you can schedule our first "meeting" or let me know if you prefer to stick to messaging. I'm excited to learn more about how I can help you achieve your goals!

Biography: I believe that the counseling process is based on a collaborative relationship between the counselor and client. I see our counseling relationship as one in which you are in charge of setting your own goals and I am privileged to companion you through that process. My approach to therapy is a holistic one: we will discuss your goals from many perspectives and examine the effects on your body, mind, spirit, relationships, work, and any other areas that are important to you. I draw from cognitive-behavioral therapy and solution-focused theories of counseling. I work with adults individually and as couples. I am a trained TFCBT therapist and help children and families deal with trauma. I help clients explore the life moments where they feel "stuck" in their journey. Some of the symptoms that show up with the "stuck" feeling are panic, anxiety, and depression. Your decision to choose to enter counseling is a voluntary one and you may terminate it at any time. If at some point ethical standards dictate it is in your best interest to refer you to another therapist, I will do so. If this happens I would provide you with names of professionals to contact. It is impossible to guarantee any specific results regarding your counseling goals, but we will work together to achieve the best results possible. At the end of our first session we will decide if we want to enter a counseling relationship. I will respond to message typically one time per day Monday - Saturday. This will occur typically after 5:00 p.m. EST.

Biography: Is something keeping you up at night or you are unable to focus at home and/or work/school? There is a chance that you may need to speak to someone and I may be that someone you need to speak with. My name is Shalika Eaddy-Henderson and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I have been working in the field for about 8 years and have worked with several populations (homeless, substance abuse, children, adolescence and adults). I started a non-traditional path where I received my first Master's degree in Public Administration while working for a bank. While this may not seem like it is the best path to eventually obtain a Master's degree in Social Work, it helped me tremendously. I gained an appreciation for some of the things an individual may go through which can lead to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. Working at a bank is the reason why I chose the career path of being a Social Worker, to be able to help others manage the stressors of life. My approach to therapy is to meet the client where they are in a prompt and appropriate manner. I like to begin my sessions with how your week, day or last hour has been and then move into the therapeutic process. However, it will be totally up to you how you would like to begin the process as THERAPY IS FOR YOU! I attended the University of New Haven (CT) for my Master's in Public Administration and Fordham University (NY) for my Master's in Social Work and have enjoyed every bit of the transition from being employed with a bank to engaging in the therapeutic process with individuals. Additionally, I am close to completing my Doctorate in Social Work at Capella University. It will be a pleasure working with you when and if you are ready!

Biography: Description of me for clients I am Les Brinson, and I am a Ph.D. licensed psychologist. As a service provider, I have been associated with mental health, counseling, and treatment agencies exclusively since 1961. In that 50+ year journey I have had responsibilities for everything behavioral from managing, teaching, and treating a wide range of clients including college students, residential placed teenagers presenting mostly with conduct disorders and cognitive delays to providing individual and group therapy to inmates in a local federal prison to a 40-year term as a university professor and department chair where I taught all of counseling and psychotherapy courses in the curriculum during my tenure. Essentially, I have always carved out time to provide counseling and therapy to clients which have always been my passion. In terms of my mode or modes of counseling or therapy, at some point in my career, I have been an advocate and user of the more popular ones such as Client-Centered Therapy, to CBT to an approach that I have used successfully. I refer to it as "Systemic Psychotherapy". Therefore, I consider myself a classic eclectic. In sum, I try to determine early on where the client is and then draw on my knowledge and experiences to employ a suitable effective, and efficient treatment approach to move the client to heal or rehabilitation as quickly as possible.

Biography: I have been in the field of helping people since 1976 when I became involved with a juvenile first time offender and "ungovernable" youth program. From there, I have worked with children and families in a variety of situations. Throughout my 45 years of experience, I have been a licensed medical social worker where I worked with home health/hospice; as a hospital based trauma, surgery, and orthopedic social worker; and as an in patient, intensive outpatient, and general outpatient psychiatric social worker. The combination of skills has led to where I am now- a generalist with a vast array of experience and training. One area that I enjoy working with is persons in life transition. Often, life throws us a curve and the plans that we thought we had suddenly change. Life's circumstances can be rewarding and also cruel, leaving us confused, stuck, anxious, sad, in a rut and not sure what to do. During some of these changes, we can get back on track and resume our course, but others may require a bit more adaptation and ultimately redefinition of ourselves. An example is when one becomes physically or medically disabled. The loss of identity, sense of usefulness, and belonging (to name only a few) can leave us devastated and asking, "WHY". I can't promise that I have the answers to life's challenges, but maybe, we can explore that journey, be it a new one for you, and come up with some skills to improve your coping with your life's situation. I believe that life is a journey, let's take it one step at a time.

Biography: Sometimes we feel 'stuck.' Sometimes we experience negative emotions which we feel conflict with our values, morals, ideals. Sometimes we feel an emptiness. Like our inner flame...the one which burns inside, pushing us to set & pursue goals, dream, live life with a sense of anticipation...has dimmed, until just an ember. Maybe symptoms of mental illness make life hard. And navigating through life, each day, each moment, feels like tedious work. However...please know there is help. There is hope. There is healing. There is so much more to life than what you may be currently experiencing. I have years of experience serving others. I have taught middle school and high school English; worked as a therapist in community mental health and private practice; and worked as a school counselor. I am a counselor who is a Christian. Biography: Someone much wiser than myself once said that while we all experience pain at various times in our lives, it's how we choose to respond to the pain that can define who we are. Do we continue to suffer, or do we take that pain, acknowledge that it's part of who we are, and forge ahead to build something greater? Obviously, you know life isn't a walk through the park - someone else said that too - or you wouldn't be looking for a therapist to help you move past the pain and suffering and help you make sense of where you've been and where you'd like to go. In 30 years as a licensed clinical social worker in North Carolina, I've worked in a variety of settings, including a wilderness camp, hospitals, schools, behavioral health agencies, correctional facilities, and social service agencies, where I worked primarily with foster children. No matter what setting, my passion has been in working with clients individually and helping them move past whatever they feel might be holding them back from reaching their full potential. My approach to working with clients is client-centered, strengths-centered, compassionate, and collaborative, as I believe there needs to be an explicit understanding of what we will be working on together. I draw upon years of using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness, and among my areas of interest are working with clients whose lives have been affected by trauma, grief, and substance abuse. If you are currently struggling with issues that are making things difficult for you, I commend you for having the courage to reach out. If you're struggling in your relationships, then undoubtedly it's affecting things at work, and vice versa. That's the way these things go. But just as things may have felt they're beginning to unravel piece by piece, they can also begin to be put back together. Piece by piece. It's a process, but things CAN get better. It would be my honor to be a part of your journey, but regardless I wish you nothing but the best as you take these first steps.

Your hospital may also have a patient advocate on staff who can help guide you through your coverage or your financial assistance options. You can also find your own guide through the Patient Advocate Foundation.
How can patients effectively advocate for themselves during appointments with Counselors in Durham, NC?
How can patients effectively advocate for themselves during appointments with Counselors in Durham, NC?
It is important to remember that you are a partner with your Counselor as you find the right treatment plan for you. You have a voice in your healthcare decisions, and it is important to communicate your goals and preferences clearly to get the highest quality of care.
Ways to advocate for yourself during appointments include: preparing questions in advance to ask your doctor, bringing someone with you to listen and take notes, asking your Counselor to clarify when you do not understand something, and being honest when you have concerns.
If you are unsure about a recommended treatment, tell your doctor you want to seek a second opinion. A quality Counselor will not take offense at this; rather, a good doctor wants to get as much information as possible to make the right treatment choice. If your Counselor does question your interest in a second opinion, it may be a sign that another Counselor may be a better fit for you.
