Many years ago, when I was contemplating going into medicine as a career I was often asked why. My response was typically because I wanted to help others. Throughout my career, that has been my goal ultimately to help those patients seeking my care. I have found it is best to begin by treating the patient as a person, an individual. Each patient should be treated with respect. I try to provide the same high-quality care for all of my patients regardless of age, health status, or other factors.

Carlos Palacio, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon with Coastal New Hampshire Neurosurgeons and sees patients in Portsmouth as well as at Advanced Spine and Orthopedics in Gilford, New Hampshire. Dr. Palacio earned his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical Center and completed his residency in general neurosurgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He then completed specialized training in pediatric neurosurgery at Children's Memorial Hospital, in Chicago, where he served as chief resident. Prior to medical school, Dr. Palacio earned his undergraduate degree at the College of the Holy Cross. He is a veteran of the United States Air Force and has more than 40 years of experience in the field of neurosurgery. Dr. Palacio is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. In 1987, he co-founded Coastal New Hampshire Neurosurgeons, the first comprehensive neurosurgical program of its kind in the region. Dr. Palacio provides advanced neurosurgical diagnoses, individualized treatment options, and recovery plans related to conditions of the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system. Dr. Palacio is fluent in English and Spanish.

Gareth Davies, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with Coastal New Hampshire Neurosurgeons in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Dr. Davies earned his medical degree at Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine and completed his residency training in neurosurgery at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. While there, he served as Neurosurgery Chief Resident and completed a fellowship in functional neurosurgery. Prior to medical school, Dr. Davies earned a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, graduating with highest honors from Middlebury College. Dr. Davies is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He provides advanced surgical care for a wide range of conditions affecting the brain and spine, with specialized expertise in deep brain stimulation for movement disorders such as tremors, dystonia, and Parkinson's disease. Dr. Davies has published and presented extensive research in the field of neurosurgery, and is the recipient of New Hampshire Magazine's "Top Doc" in neurosurgery award.

I enjoy Family Medicine because it allows me the opportunity to work with patients not only on their chronic illnesses, but also healthy preventative measures. In addition, treating patients of ages from the infant stages to the elderly is challenging and extremely rewarding.
