Biography: Dr. Accordino graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor of science in Pre-medicine with minors in Health Policy and Administration and Biology. She completed her medical degree at The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. While in medical school she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society which recognizes high educational achievement. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Weill Cornell Medical Center and her Medical Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Fellow. During that time, she was awarded a Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award and Merit Award. She also served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cancer-Related Population Sciences supported by the National Cancer Institute for her work in quality improvement and health outcomes research. Upon fellowship graduation she became an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Columbia University. Since her faculty appointment she has received grant funding from multiple agencies including: The American Society of Clinical Oncology, The HOPE Foundation, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, The American Cancer Society, and the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute. Dr. Accordino is currently involved in patient care, clinical research, education, and quality improvement. Dr. Accordino's research aims to improve the quality and delivery of cancer care, and cancer survivorship. Dr. Accordino participates in clinical trials at the local, national, and international level. She also has experience leading multicenter cancer trials through the SWOG Cooperative Group. The overall goal of her research is to improve quality and outcomes within oncology.

Biography: Dr. Iwamoto is a neuro-oncologist whose previous training includes a neurology residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and a neuro-oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. For over three years, Dr. Iwamoto was an attending physician and an investigator at the Neuro-oncology Branch, a trans-institute branch of the National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, in Bethesda, MD. At the intramural NIH, Dr. Iwamoto was a principal investigator in early phase clinical trials for brain tumors and worked with laboratory and computational scientists on several translational projects in brain tumors. Dr. Iwamoto was recruited to Columbia University as the Deputy Director of the Neuro-oncology Division and is actively developing the clinical and translational research components of this program. He is an expert in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors as well as neurological complications of cancer.

Biography: Aya Haggiagi, MD is an assistant professor of neurology at CUIMC, in the Division of Neuro-Oncology. Dr. Haggiagi is board certified in Neurology and Neuro-Oncology. She graduated with highest honors from the University of Al-Fateh School of Medicine in Tripoli, Libya. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia, under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Shelanski, where her research focused on biochemical and genetic changes in neurofibrillary tangle predominant dementia. Dr. Haggiagi then pursued her medicine internship training at Westchester Medical Center, followed by neurology residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. After residency, she completed a two-year fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Haggiagi was an attending physician and an investigator at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center prior to returning to NYP/CUIMC. She is the recipient of the Society for Neuro-Oncology 2017 Best Abstract Award. Her research interests include the development of clinical trials, precision medicine, and neurologic complications of immunotherapy.

Biography: Laura Donovan, MD is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at CUIMC in the Division of Neuro-Oncology. She completed her undergraduate work at Providence College and earned her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. Following an internship in internal medicine at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital, she completed her neurology training at NYP/Columbia University. She served as Chief Resident of the Neurology Department at Columbia University from 2016-2017. She completed her fellowship training in Neuro-oncology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical Center. Her research interests include improving care delivery and identifying interventions to improve quality of life in patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors.


Biography: Dr. Diaz is an assistant professor of Neurology at CUIMC, in the division of Neuro-Oncology. She is originally from Madrid, Spain, where she graduated medical school at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She then moved to the US to continue her medical education, completing an internal medicine internship followed by neurology residency at University of Virginia. She then pursued a 3-year Neuro-oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, after which she joined NYP/CUIMC. Her research interests include tumor markers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as well as clinical trials.

Biography: Dr. Jennifer H. Kuo is a board-certified surgeon-scientist nationally recognized for her expertise in the surgical treatment of thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal diseases. Dr. Kuo is an accomplished, high-volume surgeon in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including trans-oral thyroidectomy and robotic adrenalectomy. Biography: Dr. Salvatore Caruana is the Director of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia University Medical Center. He is a widely respected head and neck surgeon in the forefront of the surgical treatment of tumors of the mouth pharynx, larynx and sinuses, parathyroid surgery, thyroid gland, and salivary glands. Care Philosophy: Pancreatic cancer has been my area of clinical and research focus for the past 15 years. I participated in the process of recognition that outcomes of complex surgery such as that for pancreatic cancer are better in high volume centers when performed by experienced surgeons. In 2006, I conceived, funded and built a multidisciplinary unit with the mission of improving overall outcomes in pancreatic cancer care by integrating the care of multiple medical specialists.

Biography: Dr. S. Sunghyun Yoon is the Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Vice-Chair of Surgical Oncology Research and Education in the Department of Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). Dr. Yoon is a national and international expert in the treatment of patients with sarcomas and other soft tissue tumors, gastric (stomach) and gastroesophageal cancers, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), and melanoma. He also has over 18 years of experience in the treatment of other gastrointestinal and abdominal tumors, hepatobiliary tumors, neuroendocrine/adrenal tumors, lymphomas, and spleen tumors. He has been the principal investigator of several clinical trials examining novel treatment strategies and given numerous invited national and international lectures in relation to these cancers. Several of these trials have investigated the treatment of sarcomas, especially abdominal/retroperitoneal sarcomas, with advanced radiation techniques such as proton beam radiation and aggressive surgical resection to minimize local recurrence. He pioneered a technique for connection of the small bowel to the esophagus after total gastrectomy that is used by former surgical trainees and colleagues throughout the country due to its extremely low leakage rate. Dr. Yoon graduated from Harvard University and received his M.D. from the University of California at San Diego. He completed his residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and his fellowship in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He was an Associate Professor of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before joining the staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2012. Dr. Yoon was an Attending Surgeon in the Division of Gastric and Mixed Tumors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College before joining CUIMC in 2021. Dr. Yoon's main research interests are in cancer stem cells and targeted biological agents in combination with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. His laboratory has been funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute for 18 years and strives to translate new research discoveries into the clinic. Biography: James McKiernan, MD, is the John K. Lattimer Professor of Urology, and CEO, of ColumbiaDoctors. He also is the interim dean of Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. McKiernan graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BA in biology and received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his training in urology and general surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, followed by a urologic surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. McKiernan's clinical practice is focused on urologic oncology and particularly on surgical therapy in high-risk patients with bladder and kidney cancers. Dr. McKiernan evaluates and treats over 1,000 patients with bladder cancer every year. His research, funded by NIH and biotechnology industry grants, focuses on developing novel therapeutics for bladder cancer treatment as well as comparative effectiveness research in urologic oncology. In the management of kidney and bladder cancer, he has special expertise in organ preservation and reconstructive surgery to maximize quality of life. Dr. McKiernan's research has been published in Cancer, Cancer Research, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Journal of Urology, Urologic Oncology, and Urology. Biography: Dr. James Lee is an internationally recognized endocrine surgeon who specializes in the care of patients with thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal disorders. Dr. Lee is the Chief of Endocrine Surgery and the Edwin K. and Anne C. Weisskopf Professor of Surgical Oncology at Columbia University and the Physician Director of the Endocrine Service Line at the NY Presbyterian Hospital. Biography: Nicole Lamanna, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Hematologic Malignancies Section of the Hematology/Oncology Division. Dr. Lamanna is a hematologist/oncologist whose research interests include lymphoid leukemias, specifically chronic lymphocytic leukemia. She is an experienced clinical investigator and her research focus has been the development of combination therapies that include chemoimmunotherapy, immunomodulatory drugs, novel kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies. She also is working to find active, safer therapies for older patients with these diseases. Dr. Taback is a leader in the clinical management of melanoma, sarcoma and skin/soft tissue tumor surgery. Dr. Taback is the Director of the Melanoma and Sarcoma Program and Director of the Breast Surgery Fellowship. Biography: Dr. Stein is an Associate Professor of Medical Oncology at Columbia University Medical Center. He is a recognized expert in field of genitourinary oncology treating patients with prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancers. He is also a member of the Experimental Therapeutics program, investigating novel therapies across all solid tumors. In addition to providing standard therapies for the treatment of genitourinary cancers such as hormonal therapy, molecularly targeted therapy and chemotherapy, Dr. Stein leads multiple investigator initiated and industry sponsored clinical trials. Dr. Stein has a particular interest in the development of novel immune therapies for the treatment of prostate cancer, both in men with early recurrence of prostate cancer as well as in men with more advanced prostate cancer. Biography: Dr. Hershman is an American Cancer Society Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and is the Director of Breast Oncology and co-leader of the Cancer Population Science program at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University. She completed her medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and completed her internal medicine and oncology fellowship training at Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident. During that time she completed a Master's degree in Biostatistics at the Mailman School of Public Health. She has developed nationally recognized expertise in breast cancer treatment, prevention, and survivorship. Dr. Hershman has also developed a comprehensive multidisciplinary program to study ways of improving cancer care delivery (CCD), reducing disparities and designing studies to improve the quality of life and quality of care in breast cancer survivors. She has received funding from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Cancer Society, Department of Defense, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, PCORI, and the National Cancer Institute. She currently has mentored numerous faculty members who have been granted mentored career development awards, and has received the Women Who Conquer Cancer Mentorship Award and the CUIMC Mentor of the Year Award. Dr. Hershman has published over 450 scientific articles and has received several awards including the highly prestigious Advanced Clinical Research Award in Breast Cancer from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Advanced Medical Achievement Award from the Avon Foundation and a Giants in Cancer Care Award. She has several national leadership roles in oncology. As vice chair of the SWOG Cancer Research Network she oversees the NCI's Community Oncology Research Programs (NCORP) research portfolio, which includes prevention and epidemiology, cancer care delivery, symptom control and quality of life, and survivorship trials. Within ASCO she was selected to participate in the first Leadership Development Program and has been the Chair of the Grants Selection Committee, Chair of the ASCO Quality Care Symposium and has been a member of multiple committees and task-forces. She is on the editorial board for the Journal of Clinical Oncology and is an Associate Editor at the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
