In my practice, I spend the extra time to make certain that my patients have a thorough understanding of both their illness and the treatment options available. My particular areas of focus are Men's Heath, as well as voiding dysfunction in both Men and Women. A particular passion of mine is Community Health Awareness of Urologic Disease. I have organized numerous educational and screening programs involving prostate cancer awareness and bladder health.

Biography: James McKiernan, MD, is the John K. Lattimer Professor of Urology, and CEO, of ColumbiaDoctors. He also is the interim dean of Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. McKiernan graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BA in biology and received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his training in urology and general surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, followed by a urologic surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. McKiernan's clinical practice is focused on urologic oncology and particularly on surgical therapy in high-risk patients with bladder and kidney cancers. Dr. McKiernan evaluates and treats over 1,000 patients with bladder cancer every year. His research, funded by NIH and biotechnology industry grants, focuses on developing novel therapeutics for bladder cancer treatment as well as comparative effectiveness research in urologic oncology. In the management of kidney and bladder cancer, he has special expertise in organ preservation and reconstructive surgery to maximize quality of life. Dr. McKiernan's research has been published in Cancer, Cancer Research, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Journal of Urology, Urologic Oncology, and Urology. He has authored and co-authored more than 220 scientific articles and book chapters on urologic cancer and related issues. For the past 10 years, he has directed a research team at Columbia University Medical Center investigating quality outcomes and effectiveness in urologic cancer surgery. He has served as the Vice Chairman for the AJCC TNM Staging Task Force, Co-Chair of the AUA Guidelines Panel on non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, as well as on the American Board of Urology and Society of Urologic Oncology Examination Committees. In addition, Dr. McKiernan is the principal investigator of the NIH-funded clinical trials program of experimental therapeutics in bladder cancer at Columbia University/NYPH, which is investigating new agents for bladder preservation in patients whose cancer has recurred after standard therapy. In collaboration with researchers at Columbia's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, his team continues to develop new therapeutic strategies for managing bladder cancer.

Biography: Dr. Joseph P. Alukal is The Andrew Sabin Family Foundation Associate Professor in the Department of Urology; he is also Director of Men's Health at Columbia/NewYork-Presbyterian and Fellowship Director in Andrology/Male Reproductive Health. He serves as the Medical Director for Access-to-Care for ColumbiaDoctors. Dr. Alukal serves in a number of roles at a national and international level for professional specialty and subspecialty organizations, including the American Urological Association (AUA), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction (SSMR), of which he is a past-President and current Board Member. As a member of the AUA Ambassadors, he have lectured internationally to the Urologic Professional Societies of countries including India, Italy, and Bangladesh. He has authored or been a co-author on nearly 50 peer-reviewed publications and scientific book chapters and as well is the lead editor of the book "Design and Implementation of the Modern Men's Health Center." While as a fellow, he was funded by an AUA Foundation Award. Dr. Alukal currently serves at Columbia in a number of roles, including his service on the ColumbiaDoctors PO Strategy Committee. As well, he is the Clinical Director for the NYP Reproductive Tissue Bank, in addition to serving on the NYP Tissue Bank Medical Advisory Committee. He maintains a busy clinical practice in men's health, male infertility, male sexual dysfunction, and general urology and has been named to Castle Connolly's Top Doctors New York Metro Area every year since 2016. He is currently named to New York Magazine's Top Doctors 2024. He maintains extensive clinical collaborative relationships with numerous IVF centers, primary care, and cardiology practices in and around the New York City area. Care Philosophy: Urologic oncology is a multidisciplinary field that incorporates innovative surgical technology, systemic treatments such as chemotherapy as well as a focused research effort. As a Professor of Urology and the Clinical Director of Urologic Oncology I continually interact with colleagues in areas of medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology among others in order to provide the most comprehensive and innovative care for our patients with prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancer. Advances in robotic technology along with scientific progress in our precision medicine program have allowed us to direct therapy in unprecedented ways. As a leader in this area I look forward to continued advances in this exciting and challenging field.

Care Philosophy: Prostate cancer is a disease with highly variable outcomes - many patients have slow growing cancers that will never threaten their health, while other have aggressive cancers that may rapidly progress. A variety of new tools are available to help urologists match the right patient with the right treatment course, from cutting edge tests exposing the molecular basis of these cancers to imaging techniques that can allow precise targeting of cancers. A urologist that understands the use and limitations of these tools is critical to get the best outcomes. I am both a prostate cancer surgeon and a highly active researcher in prostate cancer genomics in the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell, allowing me to stay at the forefront of prostate cancer care in the 21st century, and delivering the best possible care to patients at Weill Cornell.

Biography: Joseph J. Del Pizzo, M.D. is the E. Darracott Vaughan Jr., Professor of Urology and the Director of the Advanced Minimally Invasive Kidney Donor Program for the Department of Urology at Weill Cornell Medicine. He joined the surgical staff at The New York Presbyterian Hospital in 2000 after serving as a clinical fellow in Laparoscopy and Minimally Invasive Urology. Prior to his fellowship, he completed his urology residency at the University of Maryland, one of the largest centers for urologic laparoscopy in the country, where he helped to establish some of the anatomical landmarks for performing laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy.At the New York Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Del Pizzo has established one of the most active and effective centers for laparoscopic and robotic surgery in urology. He has vast experience in the laparoscopic and robotic treatment of kidney and adrenal tumors, kidney sparing surgery, and living kidney donation, having done over 2,000 cases including minimally invasive partial nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy, donor nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, cryotherapy and adrenalectomy. Biography: Dix P. Poppas, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P. is Chief of Pediatric Urology at the Phyllis & David Komansky Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is the Richard Rodgers Professor of Pediatric Urology in the James Buchanan Brady Department of Urology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Poppas has been a tenured professor with Weill Cornell Medicine as of April 2006 and holds joint appointments as Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well.
