Care Philosophy: In founding The Center for Reconstructive Joint Surgery, Dr. Harwin wanted to create a joint treatment center where patients would receive the specialized, individualized care they need. Because each patient s physical, emotional and financial condition is unique, Dr. Harwin believes that a personalized approach to patient care is best. At The Center for Reconstructive Joint Surgery, Dr. Harwin supervises patient care and performs all surgical procedures. His personal staff of orthopaedic nurses, technicians, and physician assistants, as well his clerical and administrative staff, share his commitment to personalized care and take pride in getting to know each patient individually.

Care Philosophy: The cornerstone of my patient treatment philosophy is integrative care, of which surgery is but one component. I am committed to a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach to spinal disorders that might include deformity, tumor, trauma, spinal cord injury, and degenerative disease, and I tailor treatment plans to individual patients for optimal outcomes. For patients who require surgery, I don't believe my role ends after the procedure. I am interested in long-term outcomes following spinal surgery, and to that end I follow my patients long after they leave the OR, and I continue to utilize a team-based approach during the post-operative period.

Biography: Dr. Athanasios Dousmanis is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at CUMC. A general neurologist with specialty training in neuromuscular diseases, he is board-certified in general neurology and in electrodiagnostic medicine. He treats patients with a wide variety of neurologic disorders, including: dementia and Alzheimer disease, back and neck pain, epilepsy, migraine, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, myopathy, Parkinson disease, peripheral neuropathy, radiculopathy, stroke, tremor, and vertigo.

Biography: Dr. Haffey received his BA in Literature and Literary Studies in University of Colorado in 2002. He then obtained his DO degree in West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2016. He completed his internship at Stony Brook Medicine-Southampton Hospital, followed by a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia/Cornell in 2020. After his Fellowship focusing on Pain Medicine, Dr. Haffey joined Columbia University Medical Center in May 2021 and Weill Cornell Medicine in February 2025 up to present.

Biography: Dr. Elan Goldwyn is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing at NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Queens located in Fresh Meadows, NY. He received his medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine Yeshiva University and completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Goldwyn is the Director of Orthopedic Trauma Service at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens and is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and chose a career in Orthopedics because musculoskeletal conditions are some of the most common and debilitating ailments we suffer from.

Biography: Dr.Samuel Van de Velde, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at ColumbiaUniversity Irving Medical Center, is an orthopedic surgeon withNewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Brooklyn. He treats all aspects of the lowerlimb, including pediatric, adolescent, and young adult hip preservation, andsports pathology of the hip and knee. Dr. Van de Velde has a particular focuson specialized surgical interventions for hip and knee disorders, including:periacetabular Ganz osteotomies, femoral osteotomies, surgical hip dislocationand femoral capital realignment, hip arthroscopy, and anterior cruciateligament reconstruction, multi-ligament reconstruction, and meniscalsurgery. After medical school in Louvain, Belgium, Dr. Van de Velde joined the Bioengineering Laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where his NIH-funded research was commemorated with a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. While in Boston, Dr. Van de Velde was an Instructor in orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School and completed his master's degree at the Harvard School of Public Health. He also received the Ruth L. Kirschstein Award from the NIH and won the prestigious O'Donoghue Sports Injury Award together with Thomas J. Gill, IV, MD. After completing his orthopedic surgical training at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, Dr. Van de Velde visited the Royal Children's Hospital in Australia, and completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He then completed an additional year of specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of hip pathology in children and young adults in Perth, Australia. Dr. Van de Velde has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and has presented his research at both national and international medical conferences. He is a reviewer for several medical journals and sits on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr. Van de Velde participated in two medical missions to the Comoros Islands in Africa, where he performed complex limb alignment, corrective surgeries, and trained local providers. He lives with his wife and three children on Park Slope in Brooklyn.
