Biography: Ralph Layman, MD, FACS, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeon with Richmond Surgical Associates and serves as the director of Trauma Surgery and Kidney Transplant at Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Layman earned his medical degree at The University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. From there, Dr. Layman completed his internship and residency training in General Surgery at The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he served as chief resident his senior year and spent year as a research fellow in immunology. While in residency he also trained abroad, at the University of Limerick, completing a colorectal fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. He then completed his abdominal organ transplant and hepatobiliary fellowship at The University of Pittsburgh's Starzl Transplant Institute. He received his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Biology and Chemistry from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.Dr. Layman is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Society of Transplant Surgery. Dr. Layman is a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps. In more than 20 years of military service as a trauma surgeon, he has completed multiple combat deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Eastern Europe. Dr. Layman brings with him more than two decades of experience and expertise. He specializes in trauma care, general surgery, transplant surgery, and vascular surgery. He has a keen interest in hepatobiliary oncology and minimally invasive robotic surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, Society of Vascular Ultrasound, Western Trauma Association, Eastern Association of Surgical Trauma and Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.Outside of work, Dr. Layman would likely be found walking or riding his bicycle around the Fan. Biography: Dr. Sachse grew up on a dairy farm in Northeast Pennsylvania. The son of a school teacher and a historic land preservationist, Dr. Sachse knows what it means to work the land. Working the farm from an early age has given him great respect for hard work. Though the farm was always near and dear to his heart, Dr. Sachse knew at a young age that he wanted to be a physician. Dr. Sachse excelled in school and was admitted to medical school while still in high school through a unique program with Wilkes University and MCP Hahnemann University. Dr. Sachse attended Wilkes University where he spent 7 semesters earning his undergraduate degree in Biology and his 8th semester at Robert Packer Hospital as a Guthrie Scholar performing clinical research before attending medical school at MCP Hahnemann. Following medical school, Dr. Sachse moved to Pittsburgh, PA where he spent 5 years doing a general surgery residency program at Allegheny General Hospital. There, Dr. Sachse was given the strong foundation on which to build his career. His skills stood out from the beginning as he earned distinction as the Intern of the Year. Along with hard work, it was the US Army that helped Dr. Sachse make his dreams a reality. Dr. Sachse joined the military during his senior year of college under the Health Professions Scholarship Program and served his country after finishing his surgical training. Upon completion of his surgical residency, Dr. Sachse became active duty and was stationed at Fort Belvoir. Dr. Sachse was deployed twice to Iraq, in 2007 and 2009. There, Dr. Sachse quickly became the ``go-to`` surgeon. He cared for Iraqi civilians, ally forces, US contractors and US soldiers. Dr. Sachse received a Bronze Star for his meritorious service. At the end of his military commitment, Dr. Sachse decided to stay in Northern Virginia and enter private practice.

Biography: Eric L. Thomas, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon at Premier Surgical, affiliated with Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Dr. Eric Thomas has extensive expertise in robotic surgery and is the only surgeon in the region who trains fellow surgeons in the use of cutting-edge robotic surgical techniques. Dr. Thomas earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, and completed his general surgery residency at Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California. A distinguished veteran of the United States Navy, Dr. Thomas served as a flight surgeon with Marine Air Group 39 at Camp Pendleton, California. He also served as the general surgeon aboard the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) and at Naval Hospital Bremerton. Certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Thomas specializes in advanced robotic and laparoscopic surgery, as well as therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopy. With extensive experience, he treats a diverse range of conditions, including gallbladder disease, appendectomy, complex hernias, breast and gastrointestinal disorders, anti-reflux procedures, and colon/rectal surgery. Dr. Thomas actively contributes to the training and professional development of post-residency surgeons as a proctor and site for case observations with Intuitive Surgical (Da Vinci Surgical Systems). Throughout his career, he has mentored and trained medical and surgical residents. He held positions within the family practice residency program at Naval Hospital Bremerton (2006-2009), the general surgery residency program with the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance (2011-2021), and the general surgery residency program at Abrazo Arrowhead Hospital (2019-2021). In leadership roles, Dr. Thomas served as Chair of the Department of Surgery at Naval Hospital Bremerton (2006-2009) and as Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at Abrazo Arrowhead Hospital in Peoria, Arizona (2019-2021), as well as at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona (2018-2019). Dr. Thomas is a fellow and active member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He welcomes new patients and referrals.
